Idaho Gambling Laws

The Idaho State Racing Commission, a department of the Idaho State police, regulates horse racing in the state.

The Idaho Lottery Enforcement Division, regulates lotteries and bingo within the state, the only legal forms of ‘gambling’.

Casinos in the confines of Indian reservations are not regulated by the state.

Idaho Casinos

Most Idaho casinos are owned and operated by Native American Tribes and are located on tribal grounds. The machines featured in these casinos are class 2 machines and you will not find traditional table games like craps, blackjack or roulette in Idaho casinos. The legal gambling age in Idaho is 18 years of age, and because of that, there are no alcoholic beverages served in Idaho casinos.

Idaho Race Tracks and Off Track Betting

In addition to the casinos in Idaho, there are also a number of horse racing tracks, as well as off track betting (OTB) parlors. While some of these race books are operated in conjunction with casinos, the majority offer horse betting only.

Idaho Lottery

The Idaho State Lottery features a number of different games and variations. In addition to scratch tickets, Idaho also offers the Pick 3 Lottery Game. The Pick 3 and scratch tickets are operated solely by Idaho. Pick 3 drawings are held nightly at 7:59 PM.

In addition to the scratch tickets and Pick 3, Idaho has lottery games that are run in conjunction with other states. Both the PowerBall and Wild Card Lottery have partner states that participate. The PowerBall Lottery has 27 participating states and each ticket costs $1. The Wild Card Lottery has only 3 other participating states, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. There are two weekly drawings, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and tickets cost $1.

Idaho Bingo

Bingo is popular in Idaho and is at times played for sizable stakes. Most casinos have bingo halls, although play is not limited to a casino environment. There are also Bingo games held at non-profit lodges such as the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion, Eagles, VFW, as well as other assorted locations. Wherever you are in Idaho, you are not far from a Bingo game. There are well over 20 Bingo halls and parlors dotting the state.

Idaho Poker

Although there are no card rooms offering poker in the state of Idaho, there are a number of home games. In fact, home games are gaining popularity in Idaho, and are becoming easier and easier to locate. Most games are played for modest stakes, whether they are tournaments or cash games. No-Limit Texas holdem is the most popular game in both tournament and cash game settings, although very low stakes games often will feature a dealer’s choice format.

Although there are no card rooms in Idaho, the states that border it are full of casinos that feature poker rooms. Those who live in northern Idaho have the option to travel to casinos that have poker rooms in Washington or Montana. Southern Idahoans find themselves within driving distance of Nevada, where there are a number of options for poker players.

While those who like to play slot machines or bet on the horses have many options in Idaho, poker players will have to look a little harder to find a game. Most players choose the Internet or play in home games that are organized by friends and co-workers. Some make the trek to neighboring states that have legal card rooms. Poker is growing everywhere and Idaho is no exception. Despite the absence of any sanctioned poker games in the state, readers can rest assured that poker is alive and well in Idaho.
