New York Gambling Laws

Gambling in New York is governed by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board. The board, as its name applies, was originally set up in 1973 to administer racing and other betting activities. In 1993, the State Legislature expanded its remit, giving it jurisdiction over Native American casinos in the state.

New York Poker History

Poker has a long and vibrant history in New York. The game is widely believed to have spread from New Orleans to other major urban areas. With the large influx of immigrants from the ‘Old World’ seeking their fortune, it wasn’t long before poker became a feature in many an ethnic tavern. In the early days of poker it was a 20 card game, but the 52 card deck gradually took over because it allowed more players.

Today poker in New York is as popular as ever. New York players could be said to be as streetwise in poker as they are in their big city life. Many of the underground poker card rooms in New York City are well-known throughout the country.
